Sisterhood

Yelling, screeching, groaning
Noises echo through the homestead
Two sisters share one room
It’s a wonder nobody has died yet !

From TV to the side of bed
They fight on all aspects
But never judge a book by its cover
Human relations are beyond complex

The disputes play no significance
The bond among sisters is resilient
Even bereft of a moment of amity
Time with a sister is transcendent.

The Inner Voice Of A 17 Year Old

bigstock_mother_warn_her_daughter_for_b_26167676Parents have high expectations from their kids. They want them to achieve great heights. And that is one of the biggest reasons for their nagging. But they don’t understand that they unknowingly turn those high expectations in to high hurdles. They tell you to get good grades to get into a good college to earn a high-end salary job. They ask you, “What you want from life?” I don’t know what I want for dinner let alone life! When you get low grades they yell at you asking, “How are you going to be anything with these grades?” Well I will be just be a good human being and isn’t that what we all should aim for? Because all the materialistic things like money, status and power diminish to nothing and only your deeds, good and bad remain. We came with nothing and we leave with nothing except the memories of our life that our choices shaped. It is my life and I will be the one to decide what to do and what not to do with it. Even if I regret my choices later, I will deal with it because they will be my choices rather than wondering my whole life what would have been if I had done what I wanted. But it doesn’t mean I want you to neglect me completely. We all need that little push every once in a while that you provide unconditionally. But you don’t have to be a train wreck all the time. So to all the parents out there, just believe and motivate us, we will try our best and give our utmost efforts because nobody wants to be a failure. Have faith, we will do something worthwhile with our lives.

My World Of Imagination

My books, my prized possessions. Those mere words that take you on an adventure far beyond your expectations. My perfect dose away from reality. Books have a charm, the power to bewitch you and engulf you into their world, a world of fantasy.

Reality is so mundane. Books are my escape from reality. Why survive in reality when you can thrive in books. Why live one life when you can live thousands. Visit all corners of the world in a day, start a revolution the next, fall in love with a vampire before and go to Hogwarts later.

Because of books I know things, I know kindness and cruelty. I know its never too late to do the right thing, I know its our choices that decide who we truly are, I know some infinities are bigger than other infinities, I know it doesn’t matter where we come from but where we go from there. Books have a way to teach you all those life lessons without you even knowing it.

I remember buying each and every one of my books. From the first Archies to The Diary of a Wimpy Kid to Twilight to Looking For Alaska to Wuthering Heights to The Great Gatsby. The happiness I felt can’t ever be measured. Each one having their own memory, their own experience. All books have their own stories some written and some unwritten. Reading is just dreaming with open eyes. My library is my life in a room. My books, my first love.

Paperbacks took my heart and never gave it back.

Books have the power to even turn muggles into wizards. Books open the door to my world, a world of imagination.

Our First Photograph

polaroid-backsOpening the box in the attic under a layer of dust. The box of lost memories where all the magic happened. All those childhood stories come rushing back. Some a little vague and some crystal clear. Every object has its own significance, its own sentiment. Some good and some bad but all life altering. From the scribbling on a paper titled ‘a scenery’ to the friendship band, every item holds a special place in my heart. Remembering all those sweet moments, I come across this old photograph of me with an embarrassed face and my best friend Kara as always smiling. I think we were in 5th grade. I remember that day very well.

It was my first day at a new school after we shifted. I was so nervous that I didn’t get much sleep the night before. I am very a shy and reserved person so its difficult for me to make friends. I don’t easily blend with new people. So when I got to school, I had a hard time finding the right class and when I did it was very awkward. Everybody started staring at me like I was an alien and I got conscious and tripped and ultimately fell to a bad day. All the kids laughed at me and made fun of me until the teacher entered. After introducing me she started teaching none other the worst subject – Maths. As she droned on and on about fractions, I felt more and more sleepy. I don’t even remember closing my eyes when i suddenly woke up by someone yelling, “Oh, look here we have another one. Someone please wake her UP !” I instantly sat up straight and with sleepy eyes saw a girl standing beside me not caring about the attention we were receiving. “I know how you are” teacher said pointing at the other girl,”but the new kid looked sincere. Both of you to the corner now!” She said pointing at a corner in front of the class. As we went there the teacher pulled out a Polaroid camera,”Now for the wall of shame.”and clicked our photograph rolling her eyes at the other girl smiling in it and put it up on the bulletin board titled ‘Wall of Shame’. Apparently all the kids sent to the corner had their photos clicked and put up there. Later when the teacher resumed teaching and we were stuck in the corner the other girl whispered,”How can other kids not sleep while she is teaching? By the way, I am Kara, and its a pleasure to meet someone normal in this school.” And we have been inseparable ever since. I met Kara on that insufferable morning who made the rest of the day bearable. Later we sneaked that photo, our first photograph together of thousands more to come.

If I had to pick a friend on that day I definitely wouldn’t have picked Kara as she and I are very different and she has a very badass personality unlike me. So I am glad that you don’t get to pick your friends because they eventually find you!

An Important Lesson

Movie-theatre1

So I was extremely excited . I came early and had already bought all my favourites from the candy bar so I wouldn’t have to go out in the intermission and risk missing any scene of the movie. Popcorn in one hand and coke in another , I was ready to go . It was a premier and me and my sister were going ecstatic ( mostly me ) to see the next instalment of twilight ( a teen series ). The theatre was pretty isolated.

” I can’t believe am finally going to see the movie ! ” I said erratically.

” Yeah , I know huh .” My sister replied while texting on her phone.

Just when we were about to enter the hall , a guy sealed it shut.

” Sorry folks , the show has been cancelled .” He said with a blank expression.

” Wait , What ? Why ?” I asked with a croaked voice.

” Well , the prints came late and its going to take some time to run it , so no-show today. We’ll get you a refund. Feel free to come back tomorrow , I am sure it will be sorted out till then . ” He said leaving me with a shocked expression and a pain in my heart .

Then in an unexpected turn of events , my sister stepped in.

” How dare you ! ” I turned my head towards her . ” How can you people be so irresponsible. We booked the tickets for this show two weeks ago. This movie is already releasing late in India and my sister was so happy to finally be able to watch it. You broke her heart. I don’t want a refund . I want to see this movie TODAY !” She yelled at the manager long enough to scare him to death.

After ten minutes he returned and arranged a show for us after half an hour and refunded our food ( which was half eaten ) and upgraded our seats. I was the perfect picture of joy. That manager was never to be seen again , well I did see one guy run like hell after seeing my sister who looked awful a lot like that manager. That day I understood my sister loves me a lot just doesn’t show it a lot. I loved the movie and learned a very important lesson – Never to get on my sister’s bad side , ever !

The Second Dinner

“Patty, I am so hungry .” I told my big sister , rubbing my tummy . “But you just had dinner .” Patty reminded me. ” But it’s already time for my second dinner .” I said impatiently . ” There is no such thing as a second dinner ! How much can an eight year old kid even eat ? Where does it all even go ?” She said pointing at my skinny body . This was the first time we were alone at home as our parents were out on dinner and mum had fixed dinner for us which was now in refrigerator . Me being a home alone movie’s fan , I was pretty excited what adventure the night would bring us and soon found out it was an empty stomach as Patty spilled our leftover dinner. ” Don’t worry Sam , help me clean this up and I will think of something , I won’t let you starve for your second dinner.”She said with confidence. Then she fished out a packet of Maggi (a brand of instant noodles ) .” But I don’t really like it ” I said with a disappointing tone . ” Sam , just try it this time , I will make it special for you . ” Patty said partly because she didn’t know how to cook anything else . I know its pretty easy to make Maggi and you don’t have to do anything but the way she made it was enchanting . Carefully adding all the ingredients and stirring them , she was so happy like she was the only one who could make it with such perfection , the expression on her face was of pure bliss. She cooked it with so much love how could I not find it delicious . ” Patty , this is my favourite dish now .” I told her while slurping it . She replied with her big smile that I adore. The Maggi my sister makes is still my favourite dish (for second dinner) .

Summer Paradise

pool_landscape

The chlorine smell hits my nose, the smell of swimming pool , smell of all those childhood memories. All the kids running to the stuffy locker room to change and end this scorching heat by jumping in the cold water of the big odd-shaped pool. The lifeguard shouting and whistling on top of his lungs telling the lazy bums to get out of the pool as their time is way over , but nobody wants to leave the relaxing water and go back to face the hot sun. Today being one of the most sunny day contributes in it also being one of the most crowded day at the pool. Mothers gossiping with other mothers and applying sunscreen under the cool shade of the umbrellas. Kids boasting about their perfect handstand and somersaults and just splashing water everywhere and having a merry time.In the kiddie pool , toddlers covered in tubes and rings trying to keep up with their trainer . Just another fun day at the pool. Time to join the fun and I jump into the pool with a big splash . Ah , now this is my paradise.
